CHAPTER 11

The next few days went by and I actually felt like I had time to catch my breath and look at the wedding plans in a different light.

It appeared as though things were falling into place nicely. Ted and his parents had absolutely no issue with a Christmas afternoon wedding. Reba didn’t care one way or the other, and Penny said she would do Christmas morning with her children and then take them to her parents’ house at noon so she could be at the wedding.

We already had the space picked out with the cafe, plus the trees and poinsettias, along with the red carpet. We figured we could just use the tables and chairs that were already used every day for patrons as the seating for both the ceremony and the meal afterward.

My mother recommended that we just do a very simple pasta and baked chicken meal with some roasted vegetables. That sounded pretty great, plus, as she sold me, she could make them all up ahead of time in disposable aluminum pans. We would just have to heat them up in the ovens while we sipped on wine and enjoyed some music on the sound system. I did some digging and found that as long as we weren’t selling the wine and we weren’t drinking during our open business hours, I was fine to have some bottles around to celebrate with friends and family.

For dessert, I was fortunate enough to get a reasonable wedding cake ordered by the bakery across the street. Candy Robbins was a sweet woman who had a reputation for making the best cakes in town. She supplied cakes for all of the major celebrations that anyone could dream of.

When I first opened the cafe, I was nervous about serving baked goods because I knew she was right across the street. I didn’t want to step on her toes, but, as she informed me when I ventured to her place to order the cake, it was the best thing that could’ve happened to her business. She explained to me that it forced her to specialize in cake making exclusively, which it turns out was a hugely underserved market. People in town no longer had to drive to the grocery store and get a cake from the case. They could now go to Candy and have it customized for just a little bit more.

I was so excited to have a Candy Robbins wedding cake.

About the only thing that wasn’t quite going the way I’d hoped was the packages that kept showing up. Two more since the last one, bringing the total number of packages to four. They were just sitting in the kitchen, and every time I tried to bring them up, Reba and Penny shut the conversation down immediately.

The wedding dress had me concerned as well. My mother said that I only had to wait a few more days and I’d be able to try the dress on for size. When I told her
